Our Story
How It Began
The Ubantu Foundation was established in 2009 by a group of passionate community leaders who believed that lasting change could only come from within communities themselves. Inspired by the ancient African philosophy of Ubuntu — "I am because we are" — they set out to create an organization that would honor this wisdom.
What started as a small literacy program in Nairobi has grown into a multi-country organization impacting over 12,000 lives across 48 communities in 6 African nations.
Our approach is simple: listen first, then act together. Every program we run is co-designed with the communities we serve.
What Guides Us
We believe in the interconnectedness of all people. Our strength comes from our unity and shared humanity.
We operate with full transparency and accountability to the communities we serve and our donors.
We don't give handouts — we build capacity, skills, and confidence for self-sustaining growth.
Every program is designed to outlast our involvement, creating lasting change for generations.
We celebrate African heritage, wisdom, and identity as the foundation of all our work.
We partner with local governments, NGOs, and businesses to amplify our collective impact.
